end of week one

Unfortunately, there was a mix-up on the plans - it said 12 inches one place, and 21 inches another, so the crew spent yesterday digging to 21 inches, just to be safe. Now there's a trench 21 inches deep outlining where the new addition will go. Good thing - they came across the main water and sewer lines!

Today, finally, they are setting up the forms so the footings can be poured next week.
It's beginning to look like a construction site, and not just a dirt pile.

They also dug a more shallow trench across the front of the house, where they plan to drill rebar into the existing slab, and glue them in, then fill the trench and cover the loose end of the rebar, thus making a secure joint where the new slab will get poured! Ingenious!
